London’s Marriott Hotel Park Lane won a contest to turn a unused “grey space” on their top fourth floor into a gorgeous new rooftop restaurant where people can stop by to enjoy sunny picnics with fun plates like the “manwich” which consists of pulled pork and cheese, and drinks that range from fresh juices to craft beers all set amongst a garden of herbs and flowers. There’s even a secret entrance.
The contest was part of a Marriott program to challenge European hotels to find and fix up drab spaces into food and beverage hotspots. The $40,000 prize purse resulted in the creation of the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane’s new restaurant called Roofnic. They don’t take reservations but invite drop-ins.
The secret entrance is at the far end of Oxford Street near Marble Arch, via staircase that leads up to the surprisingly comfy terrace dotted with brightly colored furniture.
Here’s a link to the full menu. Some of the highlights that caught my eye – butternut squash and goat cheese quiche, burnt broccoli and chilli salad, jack bauer beef tacos for fans of 24, chicken satay sliders, and square steak pie.
Desserts sound yummy too, like their Pudding Cup with chocolate crumble and honeycomb. Of course, you can’t go wrong with their spin on a classic – Milk & Cookies. The cookies include sea salt, brown butter and Nutella.
Thirsty yet and turned down the milk? You can make the desserts into hard shakes like the PB&J that includes bourbon or get a couple of beers with names like Punk IPA or Everyday Anarchy. There are also cocktails, and if you’re into the juicing craze and just need a pick-me-up, they’ve got a drink just for you called the Big Bang. It’s a blend of carrot, pear, spinach, turmeric, ginger and matcha root.
Roofnic’s hours are 10am to 10pm, and the restaurant can be rented out for private parties of up to 100 guests. Roofnic sounds like a great way to take a break in the middle of the city while enjoying some greenery and light bites.
