The American Express Gold Card has a new referral offer, as reported by Doctor of Credit (H/T).

You can earn 40,000 Membership Rewards (MR) Points and a $250 Ticketmaster credit after spending $2,000 within the first three months. This offer can only be taken advantage of if someone else refers you to get the Gold Card. Otherwise, you will receive the Gold Card’s standard sign-up bonus worth 35,000 MR points.

A Quick Overview of the Gold Card

The American Express Gold Card is one of the best transferrable points cards for dining and grocery store expenses. That’s because you can earn 4x MR points on both categories up to the first $25,000 in expenses per year. Furthermore, you can earn 3x MR points on airfare booked with amextravel.com and just one point per dollar for non-bonus spend.

The Gold Card is a stalwart in the issuer’s Membership Rewards program. That gives cardholders access to over 20 hotel and airline partners, which is the most in the industry. You will have a plethora of redemption options with the Gold Card. However, the best way to redeem MR points is to transfer them to airline partners.

Moreover, the Gold Card comes with a slew of credits and benefits that will help justify its $250 annual fee. You will receive a $100 airline incidental credit and $120 in dining credits per year. If you successfully meet the sign-up bonus requirements, you will also receive the $250 Ticketmaster credit. That credit alone will justify the card’s annual fee for the first year.

Analysis

I like this referral offer from American Express. However, I wish that they made it the standard sign-up bonus. The use of referrals to get the offer saves American Express money. But fewer prospective cardholders will receive the offer.

You can recoup the first year’s annual fee if you use the Ticketmaster credit in full. Many American Express cardholders attend sports events, concerts, and other events where tickets are necessary. Consider this offer like getting $250 discount on tickets for an event.

However, those who do not often attend these events will be less likely to use the credit. This group of people who still want the Gold Card could take the standard 35,000-point offer or look for targeted offers.

Final Draw

Those who are referred to the American Express Gold Card with this bonus should take it! It’s a fantastic deal that should not be passed up given the value of Membership Rewards points.

Unfortunately, I do not have a Gold Card because its redundant to my Chase Sapphire Reserve. If anyone has a referral link, please post in the comments below. You will be helping prospective cardholders take advantage of a great deal.

Update (8/14/2019)

Doctor of Credit (H/T) mentioned in a second post yesterday that you need to refer people by email.  And when signing up for the offer, those who are referred need to use the same e-mail that you referred them with.

Furthermore, there are similar offers for both American Express Everyday Cards and the Blue Cash Everyday Card. All offers include the $250 Ticketmaster credit and some additional MR points or cash back.
