Highlights: Hyatt Place Santa Cruz

This was such a nice stay! Lady & friends were in town preparing and training for a triathlon, and needed an economical, convenient base. This Hyatt Place is a quick 10-15 minute walk to downtown Santa Cruz, and a similar distance to the beach and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. They had great service – even being as kind as to waive the valet fee, saving me a total of $30 over the two nights! Breakfast was a mad house, but I would love to come back here. Be warned – it books up quickly! For 15,000 points, it’s a steal. This place was selling out quick, with rates at $459 per night – easily $500 after taxes.

My standard hotel reviews include a breakdown by the following topics. Feel free to skip to whichever section you find most interesting.

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

Drive up the hill if you so choose, as valet is $15 per day. I asked at checkin if it could possibly be waived and the very friendly associate agreed! Off to a great start. It is a huge lobby, with very high ceilings, and plenty of lounging and seating area to relax and do work. It is a standard Hyatt Place check in desk with the lobby bar right around the corner.

ROOM

This was a basic double queen room in the standard format of Hyatt Place. Bathroom, workspace, L couch, and beds. It was quite spacious for our team. Couple small issues – wifi was spotty and slow, most likely due to the crowding. Hotel was $459 cash rate for the weekend! Crazy pricing. Additionally, my desk lamp was super flickering, so hotel engineering swapped that out.

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

As I was in Santa Cruz on the summer weekend, there were plenty of young families and adults ready to enjoy the sun and beach.

FOOD & DRINK

I checked out the breakfast in the morning, which was swarming on Labor Day with parents, adults, kids, you name it. It was a nightmare so I got out of there as quickly as I could. They have a food menu in the room as well and serve prepared food throughout the day.

FITNESS

Pass the pool on the way to the elevators – plus they have a hot tub! Fitness center is located around the corner from the room elevators, with a few elliptical and treadmills, and some free weights. Sufficient for the size.

MISCELLANEOUS

I really appreciated the nice and kind service I got from this place. Everyone was friendly and accommodating to my asks, waiving my valet fee and offering me two waters and allowing me to choose other beverages. They also told me to call Hyatt reservations when I told them I wanted to come back in a few weeks, as they were unsure why I was having difficulty booking (later found out they implemented a two-night minimum on weekends). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to bypass that one, but overall I greatly enjoyed my stay, visiting the downtown of Santa Cruz and the beach and Boardwalk!
