I am probably the worst nightmare for some small boutique hotels. When I make my booking, I continue to look for ways to save money as I like to get the best value possible.

Over the years, I have found there is a pretty simple way to get the best price. All you need to do is put a little bit of time and effort into it.

My Booking Process

Usually when I book a hotel, I do a little research and then try to find the best price. This involves checking sites like Trivago and Booking.com then I will usually make my reservation directly with the hotel.

As I like to collect frequent flyer miles, I will also check both Kaligo and Rocketmiles as booking via those sites earns me a lot of Avios with British Airways. If they are the same price or very close to the price, I’ll book through them.

How To Save Money

Hotels generally change the prices to fill the rooms so you need to reserve a refundable room and then keep an eye on the prices. It really is that simple. In January I booked a room in Berlin for late March and it came to €417.

In February, the room price reduced to €357, so I cancelled my original booking and made a new one. It’s now March and yesterday I noticed the room price had gone down again to €327. Another cancellation and a new booking was made. After this post was published, it dropped again to €267! I couldn’t believe it!

Overall Thoughts

Most people would make their booking and never check the hotel web site again. Just by checking the site every so often, I’ve managed to save €90 without much effort at all. Naturally if you book a non-refundable room, you can’t do this but in this instance it worked very well.

I like to save money (who doesn’t?) so it is well worth it. Do you have any particular tips on ways to reduce your travel spend? Thanks for reading and if you have any comments or questions please leave them below.
