After a quick nap that turned into a longer slumber, I called down to order some Tempura and Udon noodles for dinner. There was no separate button on the phone for room service, so I just called the operator who transferred me. Unfortunately, the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto’s highly-rated Mizun restaurant had closed at 9:30pm and it was 9:45. Drat, I had just missed it.
I could have gone out to a nearby restaurant but being tired after my day exploring Kyoto I relished the thought of eating in my room while wearing a robe and slippers. I was able to order from the room service “all day dining” menu, and nothing really stood out to me but I ordered the Japanese beef curry and pizza margherita.
Tick Tock: It took only 23 minutes before I heard a gentle knock at the door. The smiling attendant carefully and quietly set up the food on the table by the window, which was the perfect place to dine.
The beef curry was presented well, with some accompaniments of pearl onions and two others I wasn’t sure about. Raisins? Flavored onion strips?
The beef was a little fatty and the meat wasn’t that good but the sauce was very tasty. The rice was the standout, and had been made just right.
I hadn’t expected the pizza to be great, since I was figuring that Japanese food was their specialty. The pizza looked nice, presented on a warm wooden platter.
The crust was the best part, hot and crunchy. The sauce was a bit too thick for my liking and tasted strangely similar to plain tomato paste. A tiny container of Tabasco sauce had been provided but wouldn’t have helped much. Picking a piece up by the crust resulted in the rest of it flopping down since the dough was too soft, and the cheese was so mild it didn’t taste like much. The basil was really good, which I promptly picked off from the pizza and ate along with the crunchy crusts.

Parting thoughts – This was just an ok meal. The setting was lovely and the service was great, but with my heart set on tempura and udon I really should have just ordered earlier so I could have had the items I really wanted, or gone out to eat.
