Ritz-Carlton opened a new property on the Eastern Gulf of Thailand this week, called the Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui.
The property has 175 suites and pool villas spread over a roomy 58 acres that used to be a coconut plantation. As a nod to the land’s past, the resort features coconut throughout and utilizes natural materials in the buildings.
Onsite there’s a Muay Thai Gym with kickboxing ring, a 3800 square meter Spa with eight treatment rooms, a yoga pavilion, health bar, and a lap pool.
Here’s a rendering of the spa pool from their website –
The resort’s restaurants and bars include:
• Sea Salt, with international and Thai food
• Tides, the poolside bar
• One Rai, with cocktails and Asian appetizers
• Baan Talat, with street food served market-style
• Shook!, with Asian and Western dishes
• Pak Thai, with Southern Thai cuisine
The property also has a special Swim Reef that features over 50 species of fish. This is certain to be a draw for snorkelers, as it is the largest reef of its kind in Southeast Asia. There are also scheduled supervised fish feedings.
I was interested to read on the website that there is an advanced filtration system that “ensures that pollutants and suspended solids in the seawater are removed, resulting in a temperate and safe environment all year round.” It also said that jellyfish would be removed and that there is an artificial coral reef good for clownfish breeding, though I’m not sure exactly how the jellyfish get removed. Maybe there is just a net that prevents them from entering the “safe zone”?
The Swim Reef also has two beaches, a pool, water sports center, and tennis courts.
There are five categories of guest rooms. Here’s a screenshot overview –
There are two types of suites, the Oceanview Suite and the Two Bedroom Suite. The introductory Oceanview Suite is 1001 square feet and comes with a Terrace and Daybed. Note that although it is called the “Oceanview” Suite, the description says it could be oceanview, but it could also be garden view so I figure there are both types. Here’s a screenshot of the room from the Ritz-Carlton website –
The Two Bedroom Suite (with the same photo represented on the website) is 2002 square feet and seems to have all the same features as the Oceanview Suite, but one bedroom has a King bed and the other has two Queen beds.
There are three types of villas, which is where things start to get interesting. The Ocean View Pool Villa at 1044 square feet has an ocean view looking toward the Gulf of Thailand, and the terrace comes complete with a dining area and 200 square foot private pool.
Here’s a screenshot of the room from the Ritz website –
I can’t quite tell by looking at the picture, but it appears to have an infinity style pool with the Gulf in the background (which looks very nice indeed) and the dining area off to the side.
The next step up is the Ultimate Pool Villa, which has nearly identical specs from the villa size to the description. The pool is listed as being the exact same size as in the Ocean View Pool Villa. The difference seems to be that this villa has panoramic ocean views, so perhaps it has a better location or is on a higher floor.
The top offering at the Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui is the Villa Kasara which tops out at 2745 square feet and is two levels. There are three bedrooms, a living room, rooftop terrace, and a 645 square foot swimming pool. The villa is described as being perfect for “intimate events and weddings”. Here’s the pic for the villa –

Although there aren’t a ton of photos yet of the resort or the rooms, I especially like the sound of the Villas that have private pools. This looks like a really neat new property to check out.
