While I may not be up to the caliber of @katruns26point2 (who will soon complete her 100th marathon, awesome!!), I try to get at least 2-3 half marathons under my belt each year (I’ll be running the Strip at Night in Las Vegas next month, highly recommend it!). I’d been looking forward to the O’Hare 5K/10K “Run on the Runway” Run for a long time, and finally was able to participate this past Sunday, September 29, 2013, thanks to Michael W. Travels (@MichaelWTravels) for posting about registration opening up (and the $5 off code RUNWAYrun2012)!
So, after deciding to forgo FTU in Tampa and cashing in on 10,000 Hilton HHonor points for a DoubleTree stay nearby the night before, I found myself anxious to get out there on the runway… the LIVE runway… with planes taking off and landing!
I admit I was nowhere near the breakneck speed of British Airways “Man vs. Plane“ but I managed a leisurely hour jog filled with lots of photo ops along the way! See below.
Runners, walkers, and a lot of children of all ages had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to run on O’Hare’s newest runway, Runway 10C-28C, before it opens to air traffic on October 17, 2013 as part of the the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP). I highly suggest this event, especially for families. Little to no running experience is needed, as this is not the kind of race you run for time (although the top finishers received two domestic R/T tickets on United!).
