The Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card is a brand-new card from Marriott and Chase. It was released quietly on June 10, 2019. Marriott had mentioned in the Spring of 2019 that they were going to release a no annual fee Marriott card. This is that card.
After learning about this card, I would suggest skipping it aside from the sign-up bonus. However, it is a nice downgrade option for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card.
The Marriott Bonvoy Bold card has a sign-up bonus worth 50,000 points. You can earn it after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months. That is a high minimum spend for that amount of points. But it’s a less expensive (and easier to hit) option than the other Marriott cards.
The Bold card earns 3x points on Marriott purchases and 2x points on other general travel purchases. It also earns one point per dollar on non-bonus spend. This earning structure leaves much to be desired compared to the other Marriott cards. The other cards earn more points for general spend and Marriott purchases. While the general travel purchases category looks nice, you can get the same amount of points on any other Marriott card.
Marriott offers multiple ways to redeem their points. Here are some of the best:
This is the most obvious and basic way to redeem Marriott points. To determine how much a night is worth in points, you can use the table below:
Transfer partners are a lesser known redemption option for this card. More than 40 airlines are partners with Marriott, including United, Emirates, Delta, China Eastern, and Lufthansa. The transfer ratio is three Marriott points per one airline mile.
Perk: 15 Elite Night Credits
The Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card has one significant perk. It comes with 15 Elite Night Credits per year, which is more than enough to earn Silver Status. The minimum number of nights required for Silver Status is just 10. Unlike the Chase Marriott Boundless Card, there is no opportunity to get Gold Status by spending a sum of money.
The Bold Card also comes with standard Chase benefits and no foreign transaction fees.
Check out one of these cards if the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card is not interesting for you:
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card offers complimentary Gold Status and is a better earner for Marriott purchases. Marriott Gold Status lets you upgrade your room for no extra cost if there are nicer rooms available.
The Brilliant Card is also one of the best Marriott cards for perks. You will receive the following:
- $300 annual statement credit
- A free night after (spending $60,000 per year on the card)
- Priority Pass airport lounge access
- 10 Boingo airport Wi-Fi passes
- Global Entry or Pre-TSA membership fee waiver
This card will offer you way more for your money than the other Marriott Bonvoy cards despite having a $450 annual fee (NOT waived the first year). It’s also the better card for perks compared to the Bold Card.
World of Hyatt Card
This card from Chase and Hyatt offers an annual free night and complimentary Discoverist Status. It also has a $95 annual fee (NOT waived the first year).
The Chase World of Hyatt Card comes with a two-part sign-up bonus. First you can earn 25,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months. Then, you can earn 25,000 more points after spending $6,000 total in the first 6 months.
For earning, you get 4x Hyatt points per dollar spent at Hyatt hotels. You also earn 2x points on Dining, airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, local transit and commuting, and gym memberships.
Most travelers are better off with the Chase World of Hyatt Card, despite its annual fee. It comes with better earning opportunities, a more valuable sign-up bonus, and perks.
The Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card is a decent no annual fee option for Marriott lovers. However, its best used as a downgrade option for the Boundless Card. It’s an poor earner with an expensive sign-up bonus. And a lack of perks leaves much to be desired.
I would expect Chase and Marriott to make changes to this card within the next 6 months, so it remains competitive.
