Premise

Got this email today, and it’s been making the rounds. As of February 13th, less than one month from today, Marriott Bonvoy will be the new, combined name for the loyalty programs. Marriott Rewards, SPG, and Ritz-Carlton Rewards, will become one.

Details

Not much in the email. Other bloggers have posted about new tier changes to Marriott, but little to no details on their added benefits. Just a lot of general platitudes.

What to do NOW

Per the email, it recommends downloading the Marriott app, as the SPG one will be discontinued.

If you haven’t downloaded the Marriott Rewards Mobile App, please do so now. The SPG Mobile App will be retired on February 13, 2019.

Other than that, there are no immediate actions required. It does speak about a new Free Night Award tier coming in March (Category 8) which was discussed on the SPG / Marriott merger previously. At a higher room rate, it’s best to get those bookings in now and hope the rates haven’t changed already?

Email does say programs, benefits, and rewards won’t change with Marriott Bonvoy. Perhaps this is a “light” rebranding, not like World of Hyatt, where it’s just merging the three entities together. Points are already in a combined pool, and small changes are being made to award / status levels. You can expect the same excellent service and quality that you’ve been getting before.

Bit ashamed to say that it took me a while to understand the name, Bonvoy. I was thinking “like convoy?” but then their informational video cuts it in two – Bon and Voy, as in Bon Voyage or good travels. Lastly, I am excited to see what is in store for the upcoming year, as Starwood continues to die off.
