Folks at Aeroplan have been busy, and are doing a good job of being in the news cycle. Sine rejecting Air Canada’s bid and announcing partnership with Porter airlines, Aeroplan has added two new partners – Air Transat and Flair airlines. So, effective July 2020, Aeroplan members can look forward to earning and redeeming miles with new Aeroplan partners, Porter, Air Transat and Flair airlines. Or as a friend put it, “Take that, Air Canada!” 🙂

Air Transat is a leisure airline that connects Canadians to major sun and holiday destinations. Their network serves 6 Canadian cities, 37 sun destinations, 26 European cities and Israel. Air Transat fleet includes mostly A330’s and 737’s which are equipped with economy and club class seating, club class being more akin to domestic first class – upright extra reclining seats, blocked middle seat.

A good addition for leisure travelers in Canada that are price sensitive, and want to earn or redeem their Aeroplan miles. However, this partnership wont bring anything new to business travelers or members that redeem for business/first class seats on Star Alliance network with Aeroplan.

Flair Airlines is one of Canada’s ultra low cost carriers, that has expanded its service to include 10 Canadian cities. Whether earning or redeeming with AP, expect to pay extra for everything. Flair airlines is based out of Alberta, with its hub in Edmonton (YEG). With a majority of its routes in western Canada, Flair airlines’ partnership with Aeroplan is a good compliment to Porter airlines and its eastern Canada/US presence.

Take Away

New Aeroplan partners Air Transat and Flair are good additions but nothing to talk home about. I am sure Aeroplan is aware of this and are working diligently towards bringing some bigger partners on-board. If they can bring on One World, it would make Aeroplan a healthy competitor in the region, with smaller partners like Porter, Flair and Air Transat feeding into the One World carriers. However, with a unique blend of airline partners it will be interesting to learn if Aeroplan will allow multi-partner award booking. But that maybe a question for 2019.
