Located in Terminal 2 of Milan’s Malpensa Airport, Marriott’s first Moxy hotel is set to welcome the first guests starting September 1, 2014. In partnership with Ikea, Marriott’s targeted guest for the new brand is a Millennial (those born between the early 80’s and the early 2000’s). What does this mean for the hotel?
Marriott says the properties “will cater to today’s budget-minded, savvy travellers who thrive on self-service and embrace new technology”.
Seen as tech savvy, Millennials will be pleased to find free wifi throughout the hotel. Other generations of travelers will be happy with that as well, since just about everyone likes to be connected without getting hit with a separate fee. Check-in will also be available via mobile devices, which may mean a lower staff to guest ratio.
To fit the “budget-minded” part, Moxy Hotels’ price point will typically be between $80 and $100. In order to reach this, room descriptions include the words “functional and well designed”. I’m guessing this means small, but I like the well-designed part. Here’s a pic from their website showing outlets next to the bed.
The rooms will have built-in USB ports in each wall socket, and 42″ LCD TV’s. There are plenty of really large hotel rooms that miss the mark when it comes to intuitiveness so we’ll see how the Moxy rooms do.
Checking the date of Saturday September 6th, the prices were right within the expected range. The only difference between the Premium room and the Standard room according to description is that the Premium room also has a sofa bed that can accommodate an extra person.

The hotel will have a “Plug & Meet” area with a writing wall and computers, a 24/7 market with snacks and bottled drinks, and an evening bar.
Future Moxy Hotels are planned for Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin in Germany; Oslo, Norway; Aberdeen, Scotland and London, United Kingdom. Within 10 years, Moxy hopes to have 150 properties worldwide. Will you stay at one?
