So, we know that actress Kristin Chenoweth will be godmother of Royal Caribbean’s next innovation, Quantum of the Seas. In this video she alludes to having learned about some of the innovations Royal Caribbean has in store for those of us that will cruise aboard Quantum of the Seas. MrsMJ and I were discussing our vacation plans for the long term today, and I think that without a doubt, we are booking an inaugural cruise aboard Quantum of the Seas!! Who’s sailing with us?
It was indeed Constellation, an interior cabin. For the Caribbean I was told there’s not much to see scenery wise so I got an interior (the cheapest window was > 2x the fare), but for the future I’d strongly consider at least a window regardless of scenery. Each of my quibbles is relatively minor in itself, but on the whole it just added up to a below-expectations experience. For example, bed linens were stained. I’m sure they’d been laundered but it still grossed me out and I think/hope a more refined operator would’ve retired those sheets.
I am back! Had a nice time and did not get seasick (between the ginger pills, arm bands, and Dramamine, I was pretty well stocked). My friend did get seasick so maybe I just lucked out this time. I’d definitely consider cruising again. But, honestly, I expected a little more of Celebrity (which I’d heard was on the nicer end of mainstream cruise lines). E.g. cabin was on the shabby side, I thought. But for having paid practically nothing on the last-minute fare I’m not going to complain. Maybe will look into the Azamara/Oceania/Crystal types next time. Would be interested… Read more »
Hi Cara. Glad you were able to cruise free of motion sickness! Just for curiosity, were you on Constellation? That ship is not “old” but I haven’t personally sailed on her. What kind of cabin were you in?
Azamara etc would be more refined, and probably an older crowd. More expensive, but Azamara’s smaller ships can access ports bigger ships can’t. I’ve heard great things about Crystal! You will find a more mature crowd vs NCL/RCL.
Celebrity’s Solstice ships would be worth trying too.
@Gary, it may be mean, but we still love you.
@Cara, I hope you’ll come back and tell us how your cruise went. I really like Celebrity.
MJ thanks again; I have just booked next week’s sailing! Looking forward to your remaining cruising series of posts.
Is it mean of me to say, IMHO, the best way to avoid nausea on a cruise is to stay off any ship that Kristin Chenoweth is on?
Hi MJ, thanks for your ongoing cruising advice. Wondering if you have any thoughts cruising for people who get motion sickness? I’ve never ocean cruised (have enjoyed river cruising, though), partly bc I get awfully seasick even on ferries, but am contemplating a 4-night Caribbean w/ Celebrity that sails next week (gotta love last-minute fares!). Just a couple of so-so sounding ports, but I figured it’s a cheap way to try ocean cruising, and if I end up feeling seasick at least it’s only 4 nights.
Cara,
I have never suffered from motion sickness, so I’m probably a bad one to ask. That said, the folks I know who have used the dramamine patches report good success. Start it the day prior to your cruise. You made a wise choice for your first cruise aboard a large ocean-going vessel. I tend to recommend the 3 and 4 nighters for starter cruises for just the reason you listed. If you wind up feeling bad, you don’t have to wait long to get off the ship.
