What an interesting promotion Qantas Airways is currently running. They will take $135 off your booking per person on all eligible flights to Australia. Purportedly to pay for the passport you don’t have. This for flights from the US, and Qantas looks like an excellent experience based on their marketing videos.

Of course, for those who already have a passport, you will still get the $135 off, making it a decent deal. You’d still have to do your due diligence and compare against other carriers, but it’s not bad.

Qantas Passport Promotion Terms & Conditions

Nestled at the bottom of the website is the following fine print. Fares must be purchased by 10/19/17 and 11/28/17, so you have a little over a month to redeem! They are also only valid for flights from the US.

Disclaimer:

* Passport cost is calculated based on the combined total of the application fee ($110) and execution fee ($25) of an adult first-time applicant for a passport book in the United States. Information correct as at 15 September 2017 and published at https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/information/fees.html. Qantas Airways will provide a discount of $135 on any advertised adult or child fare to Australia in any class of service, however infant fares and frequent flyer redemption travel are not eligible. Discount will apply for each passenger on eligible fares purchased between 19 October 2017 and 28 November 2017. All currency is quoted in USD. To be eligible for this offer, booking must be made at qantas.com/passportredeem and the code ‘PASSPORT’ entered. Even if you already have a valid US passport, Qantas will honor the discount provided the process above is followed. After entry of code, total price will display with discount applied and taxes included for the least expensive itinerary. Prices may change at any time and are not guaranteed until payment is made.

Offer valid until 28 November 2017 and is only available on tickets originating and purchased in the United States. Discount is not transferable, redeemable for cash and cannot be combined with any other offer. Qantas Airways is not responsible for the processing of applications for U.S. passports or for the issuance of visas by Australian authorities. For more information visit qantas.com/passport. This offer is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with the US Office of Passport Services or any other office of the US Department of State or US Government. Conditions applicable to specific fares purchased continue to apply, including but not limited to, restrictions on dates of purchase and dates of travel, including any blackout dates.

Conclusion

This is such an interesting deal that I haven’t seen many like it before. Usually it’s your standard ho-hum low-fare deal, which I suppose this is. However, Qantas makes a concerted effort to say it’s the price of a standard passport + execution fee. Of course, nearly a whopping two-thirds of the United States has not traveled abroad and don’t own a passport, so maybe Qantas is trying to capitalize on that? Or, given the uncertain and disastrous political climate, why wouldn’t you want to visit a country with nature, beaches, a saner government, and great people? My lady and I have been meaning to go for a while – anything Aussie always piques my interest.
