HIGHLIGHTS: Four Points Sheraton San Rafael Marin County, California

This hotel was a step up from your basic Four Points, with a very large lobby, local brews bar, and nice hotel décor. Rooms were pretty basic, as was the breakfast. Its convenient Marin location made it a good hub for the wedding room block I was part of, but some billing issues make it a no-go from here on out.

My standard hotel reviews include a breakdown by the following topics. Feel free to skip to whichever section you find most interesting.

  • Highlights
  • Lobby
  • Room
  • Hotel Space / Ambiance
  • Food & Drink
  • Fitness
  • Miscellaneous

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

Drive up the hill to get to the hotel. Upon entry we were welcomed by macadamia nut cookies – trying to be more like the Doubletrees of Hilton I see! Lobby check in area was pretty spacious, with an atm, fireplace, and business center directly to the left, and check in desk and small concessions store area to the right. They were unable to upgrade us despite status, which is unfortunate.

ROOM

Basic double queen room. Complimentary two bottles of water located at the front of the room, with a nice view of the pool as well from our window. Nothing stands out about the room otherwise. They did give us automatic 4pm check out when I called about it due to Titanium status, which was appreciated and used.

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

As the wedding I was a part of was hosting its room block here, we saw many of the guests. It was also home to another wedding party, so it was lively in the lobby and the bar area.

FOOD & DRINK

Aside from the small snacks and hot meals store next to the lobby, we also had the standard breakfast buffet option that was catered as a brunch. It was utterly forgettable, with your basic eggs, chicken apple sausage, bacon, etc. They did have an omelette station which was decent.

FITNESS

You can see the nice outdoor pool from both the lobby and our room. The fitness center is open 7am to 10pm. Decent enough for a hotel of this size!

MISCELLANEOUS

Overall, it was an average stay, made negative because of the circumstances. I booked the room block rate (along with several other wedding guest parties) and found out later (from the bride and groom) that the publicly available rate was up to $20-30 cheaper than the room block! We tried speaking with the director of sales, Marriott corporate, and there was nothing they could do for matching. Utterly disgusting that they could not even match the publicly available rate, but I hope my friends did tell people to stay elsewhere after fulfilling their minimum room commitment. That type of business practice is just obscene, as they should have had the decency and forethought to lower the rate to match the publicly available rate. Marriott corporate was able to provide me 3,000 points for the trouble, which was better than nothing.

Because of that experience, I do not plan to come back, and hope you don’t either!

I did enjoy my eating in downtown San Rafael – great food at Iron Springs Public House.
