Highlights: InterContinental Los Angeles Century City

This hotel was an excellent, centrally located hotel, with interesting amenities – such as the Tesla towncar! Small hiccups on miscommunication, and a standard room, made for an average stay. I had an expiring IHG Free Night Award, and thus very motivated to use it before expiration. They have a happy hour at the hotel bar from 3-7pm, but I was unable to make it – perhaps next time! I did appreciate the generous early checkin – as early at 9am! Lobby & Check-in

I was slightly confused at the layout, thinking that the hotel was in the location of the previous Century Plaza Hyatt. The Intercontinental is in fact south of Fox Plaza, and Olympic and Santa Monica Boulevards, and north of Pico. Check in is to the left of the entrances. I was escaping an Airbnb nightmare (more on that later) and checked in extremely early, and was very grateful for their flexibility.

Note that IHG platinum guests get complimentary internet, via access code or through the room number. However, there were connectivity issues, with webpages not loading or being slow.

 

Room

A pretty standard room, but a larger than expected bathroom – separate shower and bath. Similar to my last IHG Intercontinental experience in San Francisco, this hotel had no refrigerator space available, as it only held minibar items. Thankfully, I did not need it this time.

Before sleeping, I noticed one of the fire alarm or other wall-mounted devices emitting an annoying buzzing sound. I recommend earplugs.

 

Hotel Space / Ambiance

I saw a combination of tourists, with foreign accents and little children, as well as businesspeople in suits. Its central location near FOX Studios, in Century City, as well as its easy commute to Santa Monica and West LA, or Downtown LA, make for a diverse clientele. In the evening, I saw many young professionals enjoying themselves at the hotel bar.

The hotel has a very weird layout, in the shape of a corrugated V.

 

Food & Drink

As mentioned previously, I was unable to make the happy hour, due to previous arrangements. Breakfast is not complimentary for platinum guests. In the room is a stocked minibar, and I had to ask housekeeping outside my room for water. They did provide three water bottles for night service.

 

Fitness

The gym was quite small and definitely cramped, with the machines pretty close together. It wasn’t an enjoyable experience to be crammed in there with a bunch of sweaty people.

You can see the outdoor pool from the fitness center, and it looks quite luxurious in the sun.

 

Miscellaneous

Highlight is probably the Tesla towncar service – available for guests to destinations up to 1.5 miles away. Decently prompt service – although it is first come first serve to the concierge desk on the lobby level. Note that it closes at 6pm, not 6:30pm, as they told me. Very frustrating to be given incorrect information, go down at 6:10pm, and have them tell me otherwise.

 

All in all, this was a decent stay – nothing special, but served its purpose. Perhaps I am expecting too much – after all, this is my third InterContinental hotel, and all of them were average to below average. I would stay here again, but only for a free night.
