HIGHLIGHTS: Element by Westin Bali Ubud

This hotel in Bali was a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of cities, in a nice quieter part of developing country. Highlights include the decent breakfast spread and hotel services such as a complimentary shuttle to the Monkey Forest, as well as free bikes for guests. I really appreciated the shuttle drivers flexibility in dropping us off wherever we needed on the route. I loved walking around Ubud and checking out the shops, restaurants, and especially Chatime – cheaper and better than that in the US!

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

We were swarmed at the airport by taxi drivers, but we were able to escape and call our own. We arrived super late in the evening and took a Gojek to our hotel – about a 45-60min drive, but so cheap – only like $15! However when we arrived it took about 30 minutes to get our room ready, which was unfortunate, so we sat in their open air lobby, next to a gigantic stuffed owl – adorable. The check in agent called out the shuttle to Monkey Forest, as well as free bikes available for guests. Finally the room was ready so we headed over – it is a super far walk to where we ended up, unfortunately.

 

ROOM

As I mentioned this room was very far – probably a good 2 minute walk from the lobby down several long corridors. The room was a basic King, with a small desk, large closet, and decent sized bathroom with tub/shower component. There was a cute towel bear on our bed as well, but no foam pillows. I tried to make some local calls to figure out laundry services, but the front desk told me it would be a charge to transfer locally.

 

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

The hotel was actually fairly quiet – I only saw a future other guests about, during breakfast and around the pool. I assume most were tourists, as that would fit the narrative. Note I found a laundry place around the corner from the hotel and they were able to deliver my clothes, cleaned, to the hotel lobby – sot hat was appreciated. We ordered Gojek for both delivery and a car pickup but they told us they’re not allowed to pick up from the hotel lobby, so we had to meet them on the street – a slight inconvenience.

 

FOOD & DRINK

Breakfast at the Element Ubud was interesting – while there was a huge spread of options, from Western cuisine to some traditional Indonesian dishes, I didn’t find any of it particularly great. However, it was “good enough” I think. Perhaps next time I will try their food for lunch or dinner to see what other options there are. It was hot and muggy, with plenty of bugs flying about, so not exactly the most sanitary of eating places.

 

FITNESS

We walked all through Ubud and did not work out in the hotel, but it has a lovely pool – great for relaxing, and a decent fitness center as well from the hotel photos.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

We spent plenty of time visiting downtown Ubud – checking out the various shops, restaurants, and the like. Chatime was a big get for us – $2 and of higher quality than I have come to expect of the chain in the US, so we had it several times.

I’ll have a review of Locavore forthcoming – a fancy dining experience in the heart of Ubud.  I would certainly return to the Element Ubud as it was a fantastic and relaxing experience.
