INTRODUCTION

Let’s face it – while travelling, many of us eat terribly. Fast food, or large opulent meals rich in carbs, fats, and sugars. After all, we’re on vacation! We’re enjoying ourselves! We’re taking in the local cuisine! If you’ve ever come back from a trip a few pounds heavier or with a larger beer gut, perhaps it’s time to think about how you can eat more healthily while travelling. And yes, this may not apply to all travelers in all areas, but by exercising a modicum of mental discipline, you can regulate your eating habits and feel both healthier and happier at the end of your travels.

Jasonl’s Cute Infographic

This adorably cute infographic from Jasonl, an office furniture delivery and installation company based in Australia, talks about how to eat healthily in the workplace. Most of it is common sense, and yet is easily translatable to the travelling businessperson or vacationer.

  1. Don’t Use Vending Machines
  2. Change The Habit
  3. Fruits
  4. Raw Nuts
  5. Snack Bars

Sounds simple, and I thought about how that would apply to me should I travel more frequently again.

Just adorable.

Discipline in the Office & around the World

Quintessential

It boils down to discipline. Their first point of avoiding vending machines could be easily used when traveling – avoid fast food carts, unhealthy snacking, etc. This does not mean exclude it entirely, but perhaps everything in moderation and watching what you intake would be better. Changing the habit would be simply planning ahead – if you were say going on a hike or extended excursion without eating plans, then packing some of the last three – fruits, nuts, snack bars – will both provide necessary energy while avoiding the post-workout starvation. It’s happened to me plenty of times, having not eaten at work until late afternoon and ravenously devouring a large meal during dinnertime. Planning ahead, regulating your dietary intake, and combining it with good physical activity will extend your life and help fight diseases. Not to mention, it would prevent you from making rash, impulsive decisions, or purchases, protecting your wallet as well. Win-win-win!

Physical Activity

A critical part of any one of my hotel reviews is the analysis of the fitness center. I make it a point to check out as many workout facilities as I can, as it keeps me in shape. Of course, I attribute some of that to my desire to keep Lady Hotelion, so that plays a small part.

CONCLUSION

Be healthy, think critically, plan ahead, whether the night before a trip or a day at the job. Eating healthy will keep you productive and happy, which is beneficial to long-term success. For more ideas on being healthy at work (as well as some cool stand-up desks, which I coincidentally just ordered at my place of employment) check out Jasonl!
