While the initial response and interest in both cards has been strong, I have had readers ask about the subtle differences in both versions of the card. Marriott Bonvoy Amex Canada – Best Redemption Options

  • With current Marriott redemption chart, 60,000 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points can be used for a one night stay at Cat 7 property, or two nights at Cat 4 property and so on!

  • Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to several airlines at 3:1 ratio. 60,000 50,000 points would yield 20,000 16,666 miles. However, Marriott adds a 5K bonus miles on every 60K points transferred, which results in a cool 25,000 miles!! Its best to convert in batches of 60k marriott points. Better yet, some airline rewards program offer a bonus when converting Marriott Bonvoy points. United offers a 10% bonus, BA Avios has a 30% bonus promotion on all hotel points transfers until March 31st, 2019. Aeroplan wont be far with their conversion bonus which routinely offers 30% bonus on hotel points transfer. With a 30% bonus, 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points can convert to 32,500 Avios or Aeroplan miles!

Take Away

The increased signup bonus along with 3X business accelerated earning rate on eligible gas, dining and travel will appeal to a lot of Canadians. With 15 elite nights benefit and Silver Elite status, members would only need 10 more nights to qualify for Gold Elite membership or 35 nights for Platinum Elite status. If the spend habits are aligned well with earn categories, the Marriott Bonvoy American Express cards have a strong appeal for potential cardmembers.
