My Flights is probably the most important travel app I have on my phone. It is so good that I actually elected to pay for a monthly subscription for a couple of months during a hectic travel period earlier this year.

Unfortunately, it has been announced that the app will cease to exist from 31 December 2017. This is bad news for frequent flyers around the world.

Why Will My Flights Cease?

According to an e-mail that all users received, the contract with Global Distribution Service provider Amadeus comes up for renewal at the end of the year. The new agreement does not allow My Flights access to the data required to run the service.

New security measures mean that approval from each booking agent is now required before a booking can be accessed by a third party. Essentially every airline and travel agent would need to agree to have My Flights access the data and as you can understand, this is impossible.

What Will Frequent Flyers Lose?

The reason this app is so essential is that it monitors your bookings for changes automatically. Any change triggers an alert, be it a flight time change, an aircraft change, seat change or whatever.

There’s a reason Qatar Airways are in the featured image. I had four flights change with Qatar in one booking on four separate days. Unusually I never received an e-mail from the airline – I only knew thanks to the My Flights app.

This meant I could get on the phone to the airline and make the changes I needed to virtually straight away which is very handy indeed! When you pay for the app, the checks were more frequent which was excellent.

Overall Thoughts

It is a shame that My Flights will cease as it is an excellent tool for the frequent flyer community. I would have thought that Amadeus would attempt to buy the app to keep the service operational themselves. Perhaps they did – I don’t know the background to the story.
