VIA Rail Comfort Class Review – Ottawa to Montreal (YUL)

I had forgotten how humane train travel can be. In fact, not sure why I don’t do this more often. I would argue that for certain distances, train journeys are actually shorter, if you account for check-in/security/gate procedures at airports. This revelation was thanks to a recent ride on Canada’s VIA Rail from Ottawa to Montreal, in Comfort Class (Economy). VIA Rail Comfort Class Review – Ottawa to Montreal (YUL) Origin: Ottawa Train Station Destination: Dorval Train station (YUL) Trip Duration: 1 hour 36 minutes Price: $51.00 (one-way, tax incl.) Review: 12 hours in Qatar Airways Economy Class 777-300ER Montreal to Doha

As a points and miles enthusiast, I do my utmost best to travel in ‘relative comfort’ but every now and then a combination of rigid dates/flight availability and cash prices make me do the unusual. This time around, I was supposed to travel YUL-YYZ-AMS-BOM in economy. But thanks to a winter storm, my flight from YUL-YYZ was canceled. I was rebooked on Qatar airways, YUL-DOH-BOM and found myself staring at a 12 hour journey in economy. The Y-suite. Get it? 😉 Qatar Airways Economy Class 777-300ER Flight: QR 764  YUL-DOH Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER Duration: 12hr 20min Seat: 28H Qatar was prompt...

Qatar Airways’ amazing reaction to my tweets

Recent weather mayhem at Toronto (YYZ) airport severely impacted my travel plans to Mumbai. Long string of delays and cancelations in Montreal (YUL) meant that I never made it to YYZ for my international leg to Mumbai (BOM). Long story short, I was eventually rebooked on Qatar Airways via DOH to BOM. Unfortunately, my Qatar flight (QR 764) sat at the gate, with all passengers onboard, for over two hours! Obviously, I took to twitter to share my thoughts. Qatar Airways reaction to my tweet was extraordinary and eft me equal parts confused and impressed. After two of the...

SPG Amex Credit Card – US vs Canada

While it’s widely accepted that Canadian credits cards offer lower bonuses and perks than their American counterparts, some cards in Canada are in fact closing that gap. SPG Amex Canada has announced recent upgrades (15 Elite Night Credits) to its benefits, while SPG Amex US has increased the spend limit to achieve Gold Elite status from 30k to 35k, starting January 1, 2019. Essentially, with 15 elite nights benefit and Silver Elite Status, Canadian members (like US members) would only need 10 more nights to qualify for Gold Elite membership or 35 nights for Platinum Elite status. Does this mean...

Updates on Air Canada’s new loyalty program (2019)

Air Canada has finalized its acquisition of Aeroplan and confirmed some key benefits members can look forward to. Aeroplan miles will be honored on a one-to-one basis in Air Canada’s new loyalty program, set to launch in 2020. (Although they haven’t confirmed if the award charts would remain unchanged as well. Unlikely, imo as I argued in my post about Air Canada rumors and gossip) Altitude status and privileges will remain unchanged. TD, CIBC and American Express will continue to offer Aeroplan earning credit cards All the updates above are positive and should garner a lot of confidence among...
