Belize and the United States have signed an open-skies agreement. This allows for unrestricted passenger and cargo flights between the two countries.

Having gained independence from the UK in 1981, Belize is a tourist destination in Central America. It is currently served from the USA by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

Beautiful Belize

Featuring world class diving, fantastic people and a whole array of Mayan ruins, Belize has a little something for everyone. I stayed at Mata Rocks Resort on Ambergris Caye for four nights, getting accidentally sunburned in the process.

Flying from Belize City to Ambergris Caye involves a trip on a Cessna Caravan of Tropic Air to San Pedro. After that it is a short and bumpy bus ride to the resort.

How About Those Mayan Ruins?

Belize was once home to over 2 million Mayas and there are many sites remaining today which you can explore. When I visited, I went to Lamanai, which means “submerged crocodile”.

An extraordinary array of temples and fantastic stonework is present at the site. There is a tour where you take a river cruise to get there and I have to say it’s well worth it. It is a fascinating experience!

Overall Thoughts

Now that the USA and Belize have an open-skies agreement, perhaps more airlines will fly there. Sun Country is expected to start flying from Minneapolis/St. Paul in December, so people can escape the cold winter for some Caribbean sun.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the country, so if you get the chance, you should go. Have you been to Belize before? What did you think? Thanks for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
