I won’t speculate about whether or not American’s announcement of enough aircraft orders to replace its currently operating narrowbody fleet (aside from its 737-800s) was right one or not. Truth told, I don’t know. I will say that its good to see American making a statement that its in business for the long term. Will it work? I have no idea. I will say this. In five years this will either be the smartest move in the history of commercial aviation, or the American we know today will no longer be around. Here’s to hoping it was the smartest move.
This announcement has overshadowed their Q2 financial results, which was another loss in the hundreds of millions…I guess I just don’t understand the financial side of the airline business. I feel like a company in AA’s financial position in another industry wouldn’t be in business any more at this point…It also seems concerning that every other airline is making money this quarter. It will certainly be interesting to see how these aircraft purchases play into all of this…
