Pisa is a strange place to be having a connecting flight however thanks to Qatar Airways and their flash sale to Auckland quite a few people are connecting here.

People coming from London will find they have around 6 hours to kill between the arrival of their British Airways flight and the departure of the Qatar Airways service to Doha. Here’s an idea of what to do.

Store Your Luggage At Pisa Airport

Luggage storage is offered at Pisa Airport. You go to a window and hand over your Passport. After this, it is returned and you are taken to a security screening point. Your bags are scanned and then taped up with a security screening seal.

You take the bags back to the place you started and they are locked in the luggage storage room. The whole process takes less than half an hour. The price is €7.00 per bag and you pay when you come back to collect them.

Next, Walk To The Leaning Tower Of Pisa

Yes, walk! It is approximately 45 minutes walk from the airport to the whole complex where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is. Google Maps is your friend here.

Most of the walk is through residential areas and feels quite safe. Along the way you can see how the locals live. Make sure you have a hat or sunscreen if it is summer as you will get quite warm.

Explore Piazza del Duomo In Pisa

Once you arrive you can check out the tower and all the other bits and pieces in Cathedral Square. There are markets where you can buy trinkets and you can get your photo taken with the famous tower.

Of course, this is a very popular area with tourists so you won’t be alone. It would be sad to pass through Pisa and not visit here, considering how famous it is.

There’s Also Time For Lunch

Passing by many eateries on my way to the tower, I noticed Paninoteca Il Canguro. On the way back I decided to stop in for lunch and I am glad I did! It turns out this is a family run place that has been around for decades.

Wait staff spoke English, French, Italian and probably more besides. The food is very nice and the pasta made fresh on premises which you can really tell. I got out of it with the above three courses plus two sparkling waters for €22. Recommended!

Overall Thoughts

You can do all of the above with absolutely no rush and still get back to the airport with 3 hours to spare. If you lingered over lunch or decided to book a ticket to go up inside the tower, you have another whole hour to play with. There are also taxis and buses if you don’t feel like walking. Either way, 6 hours is plenty of time to visit the main famous sight of Pisa!
