If you’re a fan of Hyatt properties and have hopes of visiting the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema or the statue of Christ the Redeemer, there was some good news earlier this week.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced the opening of the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, which is the second Hyatt property in Brazil (the first is the Grand Hyatt Sao Paulo).

To celebrate the hotel’s kick-off, a promotional offer is available which gives you the 4th night free, daily breakfast for two, as well as a complimentary 2 category upgrade to a Lagoon View room. Note that the special offer is good for bookings made through May 10, 2016 for stays between April 1 and July 1, 2016.

Use promotional code RJFRNT when booking.

Here’s a handy booking link.

There’s also 20 percent off the Hyatt Daily Rate for 2 night stays between April 5 and May 25, 2016, in a separate promotion.

The Rio de Janeiro Grand Hyatt is situated right on the beach in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood known for pristine white beaches, and the property is designed with mosaic floors, vertical gardens, and floor to ceiling windows in guest rooms. Some of them boast views of the ocean, lagoon, or both. There are three restaurants onsite, a spa, and gym/yoga room.

The hotel also has a Club floor and Lounge, where breakfast, evening cocktails, and all day tea and coffee are offered.

There are 436 guestrooms with just 42 suites, and each room comes with Brazilian flip flops and local Granado bath amenities. Each room is decorated in natural woods, stones, and fabrics. The fanciest accommodation is the Penthouse Suite with a 1,248 square foot terrace and plunge pool, and includes a private elevator that goes straight to the parking garage.

There are four main room types: Standard, View, Grand Club, and Suite.

The lowest category room is the Grand King (or Twin), which has 400 square feet and a balcony. The best available rate for a random date mid-week on July 20, 2016 is $219, and advance purchase is $176.

The next category up from the Grand King is the Pool View, and then after that is the Lagoon View) which is the one that the promotion upgrades into), and then Ocean View after that. The room size is the same as the Grand King, but is overlooking the Marapendi Lagoon. In fact, all rooms except suites are listed at exactly the same square footage of 400, and suites start at 753 square feet. 400 square feet is certainly a comfortably sized room so other than Grand Club rooms that get lounge access, you’re just paying for better views when you move between the Grand, Pool and View room types.

For the random date I selected, the Lagoon View room came to $254 a night, and the highest room type available was the Grand Executive Suite which weighed in at $1,719 a night.

As a Category 4 Hyatt property, 15,000 Gold Passport points can be redeemed for a free night. Points & Cash is offered at 7,500 points + $100, and a Grand Club upgrade is available for $219 + 3,000 Gold Passport points.

If you’re a Hyatt Diamond breakfast is complimentary, and the difference in rate between the lowest Grand room and Lagoon View room is not huge, so you may not find a ton of value in the promotion, but it may offer good savings for some readers.

I love staying at Hyatt properties and am always happy when I hear that a new hotel is being added. I’m not always jazzed about Grand Hyatt’s with a ton of guest rooms (436!) I have been pleasantly surprised at some properties. Even though there aren’t a ton of pictures up on Hyatt’s website of the new Rio property, it sounds like a great new addition!
