From Lambert-St. Louis to St. Louis Lambert

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has been renamed St. Louis Lambert International Airport.  After nearly a month of deliberation between airport officials and relatives of Albert Bond Lambert, for whom the airport was named, the St. Louis Airport Commission voted to rename the airport.

Don’t See the Change?: The St. Louis Airport Commission switched the words “Lambert” and “St. Louis”, a switch that took months to approve.

In previous months, reports surfaced that the St. Louis Airport Commission was considering renaming the airport.  The commission cited that the former name, Lambert-St. Louis International Airport lacked clarity and a connection to the metropolitan area which the airport serves.  The Airport Commission expressed their concern that many travelers visiting the region, wouldn’t recognize “Lambert Airport” as the primary airport serving the St. Louis Missouri metropolitan area.

“This effort is about aligning the Airport with our city and becoming more unified with the brand and marketing power of the St. Louis region,” stated Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, the airport’s director.

The airport commission initially proposed St. Louis International Airport at Lambert Field, however, ultimately chose St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

No. This is not a joke.  Time and money were spent over the last month or so deliberating a possible change in the airport’s name.  The airport currently serves nearly 13 million passengers and has struggled to attract new carriers and international routes.  However, the airport now features a proper name; St. Louis Lambert International Airport.  Finally, flyers won’t be confused by the former name Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.
