Two pieces of interesting news for European flyers that you need to be aware of today. Budget airline Ryanair is now offering online check-in 60 days prior to flight.

Over at the full service end of the spectrum, British Airways is offering 50% off Avios redemptions on selected routes. These are operating throughout the summer timetable.

Ryanair 60 Days Check-In

Ryanair already offer a generous online check-in window, with passengers able to check-in up to 30 days before departure. The airline is currently running an “Always Getting Better” programme and now people can check-in from 60 days to 2 hours before their flight.

The only catch is that you must pre-purchase a seat on board. Seating costs from as low as €2 for a seat down the back to €15 for seats up the front or with extra legroom.

Other parts of the “Always Getting Better” programme include connecting flights which are now offered from Rome, with other cities to follow. This is an interesting development in the evolution of low-cost carriers and one to watch.

British Airways 50% Off Avios Redemptions

As reported by Points To Be Made, British Airways are offering 50% off Avios redemptions from Birmingham.

This applies only to the seasonal summer routes to Ibiza, Palma, Malaga and Florence. My plan to start in Birmingham and fly somewhere long haul is a total non-starter.

These four routes are direct from Birmingham, operated by BA CityFlyer. There is an equivalent route from Dublin to Ibiza with excellent on board service so people in Birmingham will get a great deal.

Just 3,250 Avios one way for EuroTraveller and 6,375 one way for Club Europe along with very low taxes is excellent value.

Overall Thoughts

Extended online check-in to 60 days is very handy as you can sort out printing your boarding pass nice and early. It will be interesting to see how Ryanair get along and what else they do. The airline carries the most passengers in Europe and their dominance will only continue.

Half price Avios redemptions at British Airways is also very good. Hopefully the airline will make more offers like this to fill flights and provide good value ways to use your points.
