Background:
I found this hotel as it was featured on a site that mentioned all the new hotel openings in Auckland. The Metropolis was built in 1999 as the tallest residential building in New Zealand. The AVANI Metropolis Auckland was opened in 2017 after renovating and rebranding the previous hotel there. The hotel has 65 apartments, and the rest of the building consists of residences.
Arrival:
Our early flight from Hong Kong put us in Auckland at 8 in the morning. Rather than wait for our room to be ready at 2PM we decided to pay the 50 NZD for early check in.
Lobby
I booked a 1 Bedroom Park Suite as it stated that it fit 3 people and I booked for 3. Unfortunately the room didn’t come with a sofa bed, and they wanted to charge for the additional rollaway. They claimed that a 3rd guest would sleep fine on the sofa. Seems like a place that they love to nickle and dime here… (minus points). The sofa was not comfortable to sleep on…
The Room:
First, the room opened up to a kitchen and a small dining table for 2. The kitchen was fully stocked, with utensils and plates. There was a fridge with freezer, microwave, nespresso machine and tea kettle.
Also, there was also a full sized laundry machine and I was excited to wash some clothes but unfortunately the dryer was absolutely disgusting with gum inside!! Not very clean.
Next, the living room had the couch and TV. This overlooked a large balcony with views to the park on the left and the Skytower on the right. The views were the best part of the room in all honesty.
The bedroom was quite small, but featured a queen sized bed that was moderately comfortable. The bathroom was attached and it was a decent size with a separate shower and tub.
The towels were quite stained with more than half the towels being unclean. I was not impressed!
I’ve heard from previous reviews that the hotel is quite noisy from the nightlife and city noise below. Being on the 29th floor I can confirm that statement. I wore earplugs to drown out the noise but it’s quite concerning to me how much street noise and conversations from below that can be heard 29 floors up! I’ve stayed at hotels on the 5th floor of Times Square and have heard much much less. If you stay here, I’d recommend a high floor.
Amenities:
There is an indoor pool, but it seems a bit outdated and smelled a bit.
The Verdict:
Overall, I wouldn’t really pay more than 100 a night to stay at the AVANI Metropolis Auckland. The rooms look cheaply done, everything is nickle and dimed plus cleanliness is definitely a concern. The only redeeming quality is the excellent location. If my travels bring me back to Auckland, I will try my best to find a new hotel to try out.
