Personally, I observe people talking or looking at their phone while driving every time I am behind the wheel. Every. Time. It has created a new category of defensive driving to me. And it seems to be getting worse, as I witness more drivers’ eyes on their phones and more vehicles weaving, jerking, and otherwise putting themselves and others at risk.
7-in-10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving. Texting and emailing are still the most prevalent.
This 5-year educational campaign has recently added another compelling and very realistic video (below) showing a situation we all have likely been in while driving. In Close to Home, we are introduced to six characters on a perfectly average day. Their lives are then irrevocably changed by the devastating consequences of a seemingly innocent glance at a phone while driving. No post is worth a life. It Can Wait.
What Can You Do?
WAIT – Save your calls, posts, texts, tweets, surfing, etc. for when you safely arrive. It Can Wait!

According to AT&T: AT&T DriveMode® app silences incoming text message alerts automatically when you’re driving 15 MPH or more and turns off shortly after you stop. Parents with young drivers can receive a text message if the app is turned off. (However, the iOS App Store reviews tell of many issues including not working on iMessages and disabling streaming music. Results may vary.)
