So I’m a Starbucks fan.

It means that sometimes I’ll go out of my way to get a cup of coffee. Like the time a couple of weeks ago while staying at the Marriott Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Beach, which in my view had awful coffee. (Note: Its renovation will bring Starbucks.) Well, both mornings that we were there, I walked out of the hotel and right over to the Westin about half a mile away to grab a Starbucks coffee. I’d be equally happy with a cup of Peet’s.

Four Seasons and Park Hyatt hotels I’ve stayed years ago at have N’Espresso machines. The JW Marriott Marquis in Miami has Illy coffee. All good – and to be expected. Nothing new.

But now, a far-less-expensive chain’s doing something interesting.

The EVEN hotel I stayed in on Friday night brought in a brand that you’ll find in some Trader Joe’s supermarkets. It’s from an Atlanta roaster called Jittery Joe’s. I told IHG exec Adam Glickman, who was also there to talk about the new wellness/fitness-minded brand, that I was skeptical. But in the end, I chose the darkest roast and walked away quite happy. It was a solid cuppa joe – a good thing since you have to pay for it. No free coffee in guest rooms, but that’s literally another story.
