HIGHLIGHTS: Marriott Hotel Tang Plaza

We had a wonderful stay at the Marriott Hotel Tang Plaza, located in the upscale district of Orchard, near plenty of mass-produced shopping complexes such as Paragon, Tang Plaza, iON, and 313@Somerset. So many places to check out, eat, shop, and enjoy! Highlights include the huge breakfast spread – ice cream, ready-made noodles & soups, dim sum, and much more, as well as the kind upgrade to a larger room for our honeymoon.

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

The car dropped us off at the entrance to the hotel, next to Tang Plaza, so there were plenty of people moving about. We were greeted with a much-needed bottle of water and presented the welcome amenity options and information about the property and lounge. The lobby is huge with plenty of seating, in a wide open atrium. A large Christmas tree adorned the middle of lobby – even though it had just turned Thanksgiving! The check-in had a keypad informing me that I could pay in my home currency rather than SGD – which is always a poor deal especially with the many cards I have that don’t charge a foreign exchange fee.

 

ROOM

We were upgraded to a larger King room with a separate desk alcove of sorts. Unfortunately, the elevator up to the floors was slow as hell – even with four, it takes forever to go up or down. The lamp next to the bed was not functional, and it was a pain to turn on and off lights since they’re controlled mainly by three switches next to the bed and bathroom – for all the lights (save the desk one). The room was stuffy and it was difficult to breathe when I woke up, and the pillows were of abysmal quality. I ran into it several times this honeymoon trip, where when you lay on the pillow in flattens into nothing.

They did bring us a congratulatory bottle of wine (which we ended up leaving in the room) as well as a small box of chocolates. I enjoyed the dual sinks and dual showers – bit confusing for me. No tub though!

 

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

We saw many families and professionals. It was a lively place, on a busy commercial street. One thing of note was the elevators, with numbers going vertically (as opposed to horizontally as most elevators do). The hotel has thirty floors – including 4 and 13, so none of this superstitious garbage found in the rest of the world.

 

FOOD & DRINK

The lounge serves breakfast, as well as hors d’oeuvres of some sushi, fried chicken, salad, small plates, and the like. Appetizers are between 5:30 and 7:30, with desserts from 7:30 to 9:30, and cocktails made by hotel staff throughout. Food at the lounge was adequate, nothing special. They also only serve Pepsi products, something I have grumbled about before.

 

We had breakfast on the first floor restaurant, which is served from 7:30 to 11:00am. There was a massive spread and I am grateful I was able to get up in time. From ice cream to dim sum to noodle soups, cold cuts, and more, I enjoyed the selection immensely. Fresh fruits and berries also available, along with cold juices. Titanium status covered it – but $42/person is expensive for a breakfast!

 

This restaurant also serves buffet lunches and dinners, as well as operates a café facing the lobby during normal hours. Plenty of baked selections to try.

 

FITNESS

The fitness center was a brief outdoor walk to another part of the hotel, and is quite small for the size of the hotel. One interesting point is that they do not have a water dispenser – only bottles available at room temperature, as well as chilled in a refrigerator. We try to refill our reusable water bottles as much as we can, so having to use a plastic one wasn’t preferred.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

Overall I had a pleasant stay – it was fantastic being able to walk to many different shopping complexes, each with a wide array of offerings, within 10-20 minutes. Don’t forget the concierge has a coupon booklet for Tang Plaza – show it with your passport to get discounts off various retailers! We purchased a swath of products for various friends and family as gifts, and left with a delicious Kaya toast.

 

At nearby mall iON, we feasted at their food court, trying delicious pepper steak – cooked on a sizzling hot stone plate, as well as butter toast and delicious fish ball soup!

 

The Paragon mall had many offerings as well, such as a crab ramen from a one Michelin star restaurant called Hototogisu Ramen. Unfortunately, it was of terrible quality, and I was sorely disappointed in the food. We also had milk tea at Tiger Sugar – which was just fine. I picked up a Thai Tea McFlurry at a McDonalds dessert stall – which was delicious with crumbled oreo! Definitely wish they had that in the US.

 

This was the last hotel of our trip – unfortunately. I hope to come back soon! Note that Gojek to Singapore Changi airport cost about $21 with surge. Normal price is ~$15-18 I believe, and Grab was quoting me about $12-$15.  I did enjoy flying out of Singapore Changi and checking out the Jewel complex – with the world’s largest indoor waterfall, and delicious Royal & Assam milk tea at the Alley.
