Highlights: The Westin Long Beach

Beautiful hotel, and amazing bi-level suite for me! I’ve never stayed in a two-story hotel room before. Their flexibility was greatly appreciated – early check-in, and I’m sure they would have given late checkout had I needed it.

Shout out to those at the front desk – allowed me to pay 1,000 SPG to upgrade a friend from basic King to a much nicer executive suite. Share the wealth!

Lobby & Check-in

Immediately to the right! Called just after arriving at the beautiful Long Beach Airport – I swear, it’s like it came straight out of a Bond film or beach resort. I confirmed early check in, and was able to secure an upgrade for friends to an executive suite using my status/points/suite night awards.

Room

Note that the bi-level suite (680 sq ft.) in the Westin Long Beach is not the largest room (that honor belongs to the presidential suite at 1,094 sq ft.) However, between the battle for size and value this time, value won. The presidential suite is ~30-40% lower price, and I wanted to maximize the “value” for my 10,000 SPG redemption. At a post-tax price of roughly $2,500, that equates to a whopping 25cpp, compared to my normal 2-4cpp!

This room was smaller than the online photos. However, it was more than adequate for me and my friend, and was exceptionally wonderful to share with other friends who came to enjoy our suite. Bedroom is upstairs, with a pull out couch on the first floor. Bedroom’s nice king bed behind sliding doors, very much like in Japan, with a nice Jacuzzi in the bathtub.

Couple of issues, however. The internet was spotty, at best, and very slow. Even after upgrading to their “premium” internet, I still had issues. Thankfully, I spent most of my time outside the room.

Hotel Space / Ambiance

This hotel is designed for convention goers and business people. It also caters to tourists and events, as I was in town for a wedding. Its many conference rooms make for easy planning. I saw many families and young people enjoy the facilities and pool.

Food & Drink

Alas, I got a free drink ticket but never found an opportunity to use it. The breakfast was decent, buffet style with fresh eggs and meat options. Note that there aren’t too many restaurants close by, but a bit of a walk will get you to Long Beach downtown.

Fitness

Decent sized gym, plenty of machines. Through the gym, you’ll find the pool – very popular in the summer.

Miscellaneous

No shuttle available at the hotel. From LGB airport, a cab will run you about $25, but Uber/Lyft is cheaper, at about $12-20. Great redemption, and I am so grateful for my SPG platinum status. I hope to come back to Westin Long Beach soon!
