Everyone loves bears! London Heathrow Airport has just released their Christmas TV commercial for 2017 and it is an explosion of cuteness through and through.

The film, as Heathrow call it, is a full two minutes long and stars the bears Edward and Doris. It looks over their life together and it is really very well done.

Life of Bears

When the e-mail arrived from Heathrow Airport, I clicked the link and immediately noticed something. There was a Vickers VC10 in the frame and everyone knows I love that aircraft.

At this point it is probably best that you check out the film itself. It is well worth the two minutes and hopefully you can get all the different cultural bits in it.

What I like about it is that it is just very cute. Doris is a BOAC stewardess and our Edward meets her on a flight and is quite taken by her. The VC10 in the picture is G-ASGC which you can visit at Duxford in the UK. I recognised those seats!

After that the video goes on to chart the rest of their life together. BOAC turns into British Airways and Heathrow changes from its 1960s appearance to how it is today. Really good stuff! The music, by the way, is Petula Clark’s I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love and Petula herself makes a cameo at 39 seconds in.

Why Bears?

One thing I have noticed since living in this part of the world is the fact that British people go nuts over animals. Put an animal into a television commercial and embody that animal with human traits and it is a big success.

Many TV ads here feature an animal and some are even quite famous, such as the Meerkat’s featured in the long running campaigns for Compare The Market, a price comparison web site. You can get Meerkat stuffed toys and more, so that says a lot about how much animals work in advertising here.

Overall Thoughts

They had me at the Super VC10 of course! After watching it though, I thought it was pretty excellent and that is why I am sharing it with you. It is interesting to see the Monarch and BEA aircraft beside the VC10 lose their airline logos, but probably for the best as they don’t exist any longer.
